How the National works

"I got wonderful support from all the staff at the National. They just want to protect you, take the unnecessary burdens off you, so you can do the best work possible. They really cared about the show, and that kind of passion in an institution that size, creating as much work as it does, was really exciting and reassuring. I felt very served and loved and supported." Indhu Rubasingham, director of The Ramayana, 2001
The work of all the departments at the National is aimed at supporting and taking 'unnecessary burdens off' the people who are creating the work on the stages. Either directly or as part of a wider general and administrative support, everyone working at the National plays their part in the production of all the work seen by the public.
The range of this work is shown in the section Departmental Glossary and in more depth in Departmental Profiles which contains longer articles on backstage areas that appear in our programmes, and information about the Director and Executive Director of the National.
