NT building: developing a future design strategy

The National Theatre is in a new phase of thinking about how its mission is reflected in its building. We want to explore ways in which the building can respond to the dramatically changing environment of the South Bank, and to the NT's evolving ideas of institutional transparency. There is also an ongoing need for replacement of infrastructure, and an increased pressure to reduce energy consumption.

As an essential first step, the National has commissioned architects Haworth Tomkins to write a Conservation Management Plan for its Grade II* listed building. This is currently in the final stages of consultation.

Haworth Tomkins will also produce a master plan that will identify opportunities to meet the National's aspirations, which are likely to include the development of a site to house education and participation activity, and to animate the sides and rear of the NT building and terraces.

The National Theatre is going through a tendering process to put in place the team of consultants who can begin the process of developing capital projects identified in the plan.

The following architects have been shortlisted:

Allies and Morrison

David Chipperfield

Dixon Jones

Haworth Tompkins

Levitt Bernstein

An appointment will be made in early 2009.
