Theatre-goers wanted to judge Olivier awards

30 September 2008

The Laurence Olivier Awards are asking theatre-goers to apply for positions on its judging panel for 2010.

According to the Society of London Theatre (SLT), ten people are needed to join its panel to select the best of theatre.

Winning a place as a judge will entitle that person to a year's free supply of theatre tickets from January 1st 2009.

Peter Wilkins, chairman of the Olivier Awards Committee of the SLT, told the Evening Standard that being a judge is an important role.

"Everybody on the panel sees everything that has been proposed and that can be between 80 and 90 productions.

"Sometimes it bunches up to every night in the autumn. But for the people who apply and get chosen, they're getting for free tickets they would otherwise have paid for," he told the newspaper.

No qualifications are required, although entrants need to be over 18 and live within easy travelling distance of London.

Dame Judi Dench and Sir Ian McKellen are among previous winners of the awards.
